In the book “Osservatore del lago Trasimeno” from 1828, in the section “NOTIZIE DELLA GRECIA DELLA MOREA E DELLA GUERRA FRA LA RUSSIA E LA PORTA”, we can read that the Greek soldier Nikita Turkofagos (Νικήτας Σταματελόπουλος Τουρκοφάγος) was reported to have been dressed in an Albanian dress.

From the article:

Translated:

“1828: From the Petalidi Camp on September 7th. Taking advantage of the bombardment, the Hussar is here to send you our news and when we always sleep in the open. For a month now we have been through great hardship. Our health is not at all affected. Nikita, nicknamed the Turkophagus, accompanied the general to the review.

He is a Greek of great good looks and one of those physiognomies that characterise him. He wears Albanian clothes. His weapons are very beautiful and undoubtedly belonged to some Pasha killed in battle. He seemed transported by enthusiasm at our appearance. He was saying that with this troop he would not only drive out the Arabs from the Morea but even the Sultan from Constantinople. He has with him at most thirty men”.
