The German newspaper “Bayerische Zeitung” in issue no. 92 dated April 17, 1862 reports on Montenegrin attacks west of Krajë, Shestan and Muriq. Translation of the text:
“Turkey. (note: the news is from Turkey because Kraja was under Turkish rule and the attack was made on Turkish ‘territory’)
“As “Donau Ztg.” from Antivar under 5.d. has written, the Montenegrins continue to ravage the neighboring Turkish territories with treacherous attacks and with usual barbarity.
Thus recently they entered Krampa (?) and Scestani and there, in addition to the Catholic church and the Catholic parish, they burned 140 other houses, mainly inhabited by Catholics. They mercilessly massacred the elderly, women and children, in short, all the helpless who had not fled in time.
To escape the fate of their unfortunate co-religionists from Scestani, the Catholics of the neighboring village of Lipaci (Livari, Ljare?), pastor Peter Barnaba of Persignano at the head, left their homes and fled to Antivar.
If Scestani Nalt falls under Montenegrin rule, it is certain that the Catholic churches of Dedai and Guiza would also be engulfed in flames.
At the same time, the Montenegrins attacked Murid (Muriqi?) and renewed their attempted attack on Spuz (Spuzha?), during which they plundered and burned the villages of Dahlian, Grobacet and Verame (in Spuzha?).
Despite these recent incidents, not to mention the previous attacks on Scestaui (Shestan), Muricki (Muriqi), Creniza (Krricë), Seta (Zeta), Podgorica, Spuz, etc., Prince Nikolaus responds to every complaint by saying that he firmly denies any violation of the border by the Montenegrins and pledges to maintain the strictest neutrality towards the Porte.”
