The Albanian Xhamadan (folk vest) of Spiç (Spizza or Спичу) in 1950

The Albanian Xhamadan (mens vest) and female costumes of Spiç (Spizza or Спичу) in 1950

In this fascinating book from the 1950s, we see photographs of the folklore dresses of Spiç, historically, an Albanian coastal town near Tivar (Antivari). We must add here that the Albanians of Spiç were called “Spizzanotti”, and were often victims to Montenegrin attacks for 300 years. Today, the Spizzanotti (Spiçans) are slavicized and identify as “Montenegrins”.

The dress to the left appears to be a Xhamadan (vest) showing clear signs of Albanian heritage. The Montenegrins however call the xhamadan “anteria”. There are also other photos of female dresses of the town.

We also find photographs of female costumes of Spiç
