The Serbian tenacious insistence on invading and staying in Albanian territories (1914-1915)

In the German paper “Europäischer Geschichtskalender. Neue Folge. Einunddreißigster Jahrgang” from 1915, we can read the following:

“Albania. (June 14-mid-November.) June 14. Occupation of Albanian districts by Serbia. June 14. The leader of the Albanian insurgency, Mussa Effendi, proclaims himself President of the Republic of Albania.

June 17. The Albanian envoy in Vienna, Sureya Bey Vlora, writes in the “N. Fr. Pr.” about the situation in Albania:

Italy has concentrated only a small force of troops in Valona: the Albanian supporters of Italy had wished for Italy to overthrow Berat. The government formed by the insurgents in Berat had a certain Baki Effendi and Ismail Effendi hanged because they were close to the action in favor of Italy.

I believe that it is not in Italy’s interest to allow Serbia to reach the Adriatic. For years, Italy has been cooperating with Austria-Hungary against Serbia to support an independent Albania Italy will do everything in its power to prevent Serbia from permanently entrenching itself in Albania. On the other hand, I hope that the Albanians, faced with the jealousy between Serbia and Italy, will feel emboldened to resist the attempt to deprive them of their independence.

Incidentally, Montenegro is not in agreement with Serbia. The memory of the massacres and atrocities committed by the Serbs in Albania in recent years is still too fresh for the Albanians not to do everything in their power to save themselves from this foreign rule. Moreover, the Bulgarians and Greeks cannot agree to Serbia establishing itself on the Adriatic coast, as this would significantly disrupt the balance of power in the Balkans.”
