When Nikshiq, Podgorica, Tivari, Foca and Spizza were inhabited by Catholic and Muslim Albanians in 1878

In this publication from 1878 by Ambroise de Landemont, titled “ L’Europe et la politique orientale 1878‑1912“, we can read that Montenegro gain Albanian territories of Niksic, Podgorica, Antivari and Focha (Foca) as well as Spizza, regions which consisted of Albanians.

Cited:

“MONTENEGRO.

The territorial gains received by Montenegro are considerable. They consist of 58 square leagues, nearly a third of the territory annexed from Serbia.

The new border encompasses the towns of Nikšić, Podgoritza, Antivari, and Focha, crosses Lake Antivari, three miles from Shkodër, and opens the shores of the Adriatic to Prince Nikita, between the Boyana River and Spitsa.

The populations annexed to Montenegro are, for the most part, Catholic Albanians and Muslims; the latter number 15,000 out of the 45,000 inhabitants received by Montenegro. It was the territorial increases granted to Serbia and Montenegro that particularly offended the sensibilities of the Viennese cabinet, and Count Andrassy opposed serious counter-proposals to the Turco-Russian treaty on this point, which we will make known later.”
