The Illyrian Carnivals are an old traditional manifestation held in the villages of the Sharr Mountains Highlands (Tetovo Municipality). The birthplace of this festival is the village of Bozofcë in the Tetovo Municipality, while it has also been organized several times in the cities of Tetovo, Prizren, and several other cities. The festival is usually organized in March and has a very old tradition through which the arrival of spring and the departure of winter are announced.

The Illyrian Carnivals of Sharr are a cultural and festive tradition that reflects the ancient heritage of the Illyrian population in the Sharr Mountains region, being held as a manifestation rich in symbolic rituals. These carnivals are often associated with ancient pagan rites and practices that symbolize man’s close connection with nature, the seasons, and life cycles.

At these events, participants often dress in traditional costumes and masks that represent mythological figures, animals, or nature spirits. The masks and costumes have a deep symbolism, expressing the belief that they protect against evil forces and bring good luck and prosperity for the following year. Music, dance, and songs are an essential part of carnivals, creating an early and lively atmosphere.

Illyrian carnivals are a form of preserving Illyrian traditions and cultural heritage, passed down through generations through collective memories and active community participation. They also reflect the influence of other cultures with which the Illyrians have had contact throughout history, making these festivals a rich reflection of the cultural and spiritual interweaving of the region.

This tradition retains a special importance even today, serving as a way to strengthen local identity and promote the cultural diversity of the Sharr region.
