Osman Mustafë Bunjaku (1909-1947)

Osman Mustafë Bunjaku (1909-1947)

On December 10, 1909, Osman (Mustafë) Bunjaku was born in the village of Samadrexha in Vushtrri, into a family with patriotic traditions. Since the family was targeted for extermination by the regime of monarchical Yugoslavia, the Bunjaku family and four other families from that village, in 1924, moved and settled in Turkey.

Due to fights and murder with a Turkish family, in 1926 they returned and settled in Fier, Albania. In April 1941, Osman and Shaban Bunjaku, together with the Italian-German forces, returned to Kosovo along with part of the family. Since he had completed military training in Albania, he was assigned to the Kosovo defense units in the Llapi Zone.

He was among the most determined and emblematic personalities of the NDSH. At the Lypovica congress on July 25, 1946, he strongly opposed the departure of nationalist forces from Kosovo and, with his like-minded and fellow fighters, formed the Ibrit Division. Together with Shaban Bunjaku, Hilmi Zariqi, Jetullah Zabeli, Azem Bellaçevci, Ajet Gërguri and others, he helped organize the ranks of the NDSH.

On February 1, 1947, with Shaban Bunjaku, Rrahman Selaci, Ajet Gjeli i Çirezit, Hajriz Klinaku, Qamil Pakashtivë and others, they were ambushed by Yugoslav forces, in which case, after a two-day fight, 15 NDSH fighters fell. Osmani, with several fighters, broke through the encirclement and continued the fight. He was captured alive on March 10, 1947, in order to save his 17-year-old brother, Rexhepi, alive. He was sentenced to death and shot on August 31, 1947, at a place called Strelishte in Pristina.
