Abstract

The article examines the killing of Gramoz Palushi, a 20-year-old Albanian migrant who was murdered in Greece while celebrating Albania’s national football victory. His death is presented as the 120th case among 154 innocent migrants killed in Greece over a period spanning from the early 1990s onward. The article situates this case within a broader pattern of violence, xenophobia, and institutional neglect directed at Albanian migrants. It strongly criticizes both Greek and Albanian authorities for failing to conduct thorough investigations, ensure accountability, or provide justice to victims’ families. The piece serves as both a memorial and a call for recognition, transparency, and responsibility regarding migrant deaths.

It is the 14th anniversary of the Albanian people’s indignation at the murder of Gramos by Greek racism, an unprecedented racism that took the lives of 154 Albanian immigrants.

The murder of immigrants in Greece should have made the Greek state aware, but at the same time the Albanian state should have started investigations into these macabre murders in time. The murder of Albanian immigrants in Greece has nothing to do with criminality, but they were simply killed because they were Albanian. But how many more immigrants must be killed for the murderers to be brought to justice?

Studies published in the Albanian press and in a book show that the 20-year-old Gramos Palushi was the 120th victim in Greece, where he was stabbed because he was celebrating Albania’s victory. The 20-year-old had been celebrating in the streets of the island of Zakynthos with several other Albanian immigrants. 11 years have passed since this sensational murder, but to this day the Albanian state has not been prompted to begin investigations into the murder of the Albanian immigrants.

The lighting of 120 candles by a group of young people in front of the Greek Embassy, as well as the numerous protests in Greece by Albanian immigrants, did not raise the awareness of the Greek state at all, which spared condolences to the victim’s family.

A Study in 1991-2010 stated:
