The Albanian origin of certain Croatian and Bosnian families and tribes in the 18th-19th century

In this Bosnian publication titled “AHMET BUREK – SURNAMES OF LIVANJSKO POLJE (brief overview)” in Livno, 2012, we can read that certain Croatian and Bosnian families had Albanian origin. This claim is based on prevalence of the surname “Arnautovic” or “Arnaut”.

Cited:

ANIČIĆI: They were in Mali Kablići in 1781. One family was in Ćaići in the Arnautovići peasant settlement in 1893, after which they disappeared from this area. In the Sinj area they were in 1680 with the old surname Elez. The Aničići were recorded in 1741 by Š. Brijeg, and in the form Ančić in the same year in Tihaljina near Grude. (k) ANIĆI In Glavice and Sturba they cherish the tradition that they originated from the Imotski and Ljubuški regions.

ARAPOVIĆI: The Zaim of the ziamet, to which the village of Čuklić in the Livno field also belonged, was Mehmed-beg Arapović in 1700. Arapović is also the old surname of Žunić from the Livan village of Podhuma. (m)

ARNAUTI: In 1893, there were no more living Arnauts in Livno. Only widows remained behind Mustafa and Murat Arnaut. (m) The Orthodox Arnauts in Veliki Guber remember that earlier they were called Mihaljice from Čaprazli, and in ancient times they were from Kosora near Vrlika. They celebrate Nicholas Day. Their first surname was Miljanić, and they have a distant origin from Montenegro.

Another family of Arnauts, found in Suhača, Nuglašica and Crni Lug, is also from Kosora, but they celebrate St. George’s Day. (p) ARNAUTOVIĆS Livno and the village of Guber in Livno were left without the Arnautović beys, who were originally from Travnik, around 1920. In 1893, the sons of Nazif Arnautović from Travnik are recorded in the land registers. They were in Livno until 1920. Half a century later, Enver Arnautović, a DASP official in Livno, moved from Sarajevo, who soon moved away. Today’s Arnautovićs in Livno immigrated from Glamoč, where they still exist today. Arnautović was also previously the surname of the Bombićs in Livno. (m)”
