The text “Sipri vorrit të nji Grekomani” (“On the Grave of a Grecophile”), dated 1902, belongs to the ideological atmosphere of the Albanian National Awakening (Rilindja Kombëtare). It reflects a time when Albanian identity, loyalty, and national survival crucial.
“The Spirit of a Greek-lover
The Albanian had written:
On this grave lie the bones of a wretch,
Who gave up his own life and went astray;
An Albanian, who even though born Albanian,
Worked for the Greeks, betraying Albania.
I am called a TRAITOR, for while I was alive I wrote this,
And being a traitor, my name remains so for life.
The Greek had written:
Here lie the bones of an Albanian,
Who with flesh and soul worked for Greece;
We needed him for the service of the wretch,
With empty promises of honor we paid his devotion.
But… the Greek has no faith in the man who sells
His homeland, his nation, and his own brothers…!”
