This photo by Fatmir Selim shows Albanian soldiers in white plis (qeleshe) in Yemen. It is from 1906, during the Ottoman Empire, writes the online newspaper Mediafokus.info
‘Of course, none of them returned alive to their homes…’, wrote Selimi, a diligent researcher of the history of Albanians in Turkey. ‘Albanians are good servants, but bad hosts. They have served the whole world, but not themselves!’ – commented another historian Emin Selimi.
Zija Aliu, a dancer (now deceased), who has visited Turkey and the Albanians there many times, commented as follows: “A part of Turkey is ours, because we have given many fighters for it and many wars have been won under the leadership of Albanians…”.
According to historian Aliriza Selmani, Mullah Salihi, father of Mullah Mustafa, returned alive from this war. It is about the year 1911, when the war in Yemen took place. Meanwhile, Zekirja Abdullahu confirms that his father’s mishha did not return from that journey at all. “Maybe he returned, but he stayed in Çenekale”, Abdullahu wrote.
An Albanian in Turkey also commented on this photo, who wrote: ‘Albanians are the fools of the world, they only fought for the halq. Albanians should unite and not fight each other’.
