“Look carefully at this photo. It is from 1984. A young man being arrested. He has written the slogans: “Kosovo Republic” and “Free your friends!”
On his right side stands the UDB-agent, and on his left side the police, who have forcibly grabbed his arm. There are two different worlds: the world of injustice and the world of freedom, the world of the past and the future, the world of Socialist Federal Yugoslavia and the world of the Republic of Kosovo.
The UDB (Yugoslav secret police) cannot be seen, and the policeman is terrified, as if he feels the end of his world. And the young man, whose boyish mustache is growing so beautifully, stands proud, looking confidently at the horizon, seemingly unimpressed by what is happening to him at the moment. He sees beyond what is happening to him. He sees into the future. He works for the future.
This young man, years later, would become one of the most valuable commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Today he is our national hero Xhemajl Mete Fetahaj. He gave his life to the nation, and burned the Albano-Albanian border with his blood, becoming immortal on 31.05.1999 as a martyr of the nation at Rrasa e Zogut in Koshare. When he came to Albania to become a soldier of the nation, he left his pregnant wife and 5-year-old son in Germany.”
