How the National Museum of Belgrad took the Albanian-Macedonian Orthodox Eagle of Mark’s Monastery

This is a double-headed eagle with an Orthodox cross, discovered in 1370, part of the medieval choros from the Monastery of Mark’s, in Shushica of Shkup region. Today it is located in the National Museum in Belgrade.

Bronze choros are a type of church chandelier and were often decorated with medallions with a double-headed eagle as a symbol of Orthodoxy, throughout the Balkans, and are found until the 19th century.

The founder of Mark’s Monastery was King Volkashin, father of King Marko, who completed the construction of the church between 1366 and 1372.
