An Analysis of Paja Jovanovic’s painting depicting Albanians in the Gallery of Matica of Novi Sad

This 19th century painting by Paja Jovanovic, althought part of the “Serbian art collection” clearly shows Albanian highlanders dressed in Albanian wool costume (called tirqe). We can also see the plis (qeleshe) and the white shawl (qefin) common among the Rugova highlanders and the Albanians of Malësia.

It can therefore be condluded that Paja Jovanovic did in fact depicted Albanians in this painting and not Serbs. This leads us to conclusion number 2; the fact that Paja Jovanovic may have believed he was painting Serbs shows the lenght of the Serbian Orthodox assimilation policy directed towards the Albanian indigenous population.
