The Albanian Arbër Pasqualigo Family in Crete (Candia) from 1310

The Albanian Arbër Pasqualigo Family in Crete (Candia) from 1310

by Xhoni Qoku.

Venetian sources from the early 14th century clearly describe the Pasqualigo family’s origins as Epirote-Albanian. In a straightforward formulation, the author notes:

Italian (original):

“Questi anticamente furono Epirotj, cioè d’Albania,”
“These were once Epirotj, that is, from Albania.”

This archival evidence confirms that the Pasqualigo family, originally from Epirus/Albania, settled first in Candia (Crete) and then integrated into Rialto – Venice, where they distinguished themselves in political, commercial and diplomatic life, acquiring noble status and high state roles, including ambassadorial duties with the Emperor and the Roman court.
