Abstract
This study explores the ancient coin inscription EΣTFEΔIIYΣ, identified by Dr. Franz Baron Nopcsa in his work “On Thraco-Albanian Parallels”, as representing the Albanian word “AST i SHPEJTE,” meaning ‘fast’ or ‘quick.’ Nopcsa explains that the Epirotic gloss Aspesti (meaning ‘fast’) correlates with the Albanian speiti (fast). This linguistic connection extends to several Albanian words and forms, such as abrenda = inside, agezon = joy, ajaste = outside, anguse = narrow, ani = one.

The ancient coin from Aspendos, bearing this inscription, is emblematic of Albanian language and symbols, showing its lasting influence on modern culture, as evidenced by the continued use of similar symbols in athletics worldwide. The coin, dating around 370-330 BCE, features an athlete in combat and exemplifies the significant role of sport in ancient society. The inscription Aspendius refers to both the quickness and the eagle, with connections to Achilles and the Aquila symbol.
