Exposing Serbian Propaganda by Milorad Dodik about the “Bosniak” persecution of Sarajevo Serbs in 1996

Milorad Dodik in a tweet writes:

“The decision of the Sarajevo Serbs to leave their homes in 1996 was an act of pride because they refused to remain under Muslim rule, and therefore the memory of this move must be a testament to future generations. It is a sad fact that the Sarajevo Serbs had to leave their homes three decades ago.”

Fact Check: What really happened?

The mass departure followed intense propaganda by Bosnian Serb leaders (including Radovan Karadžić, still influential despite his 1995 ICTY indictment for genocide and war crimes). Bosnian Serb media warned of dangers under Federation control, urging evacuation.

Widespread arson and destruction occurred in Serb-held suburbs (e.g., Ilidža, Grbavica) as Serbs left—often self-inflicted or orchestrated to prevent return and create a “scorched earth” effect, per contemporary reports (e.g., LA Times, March 1996: “orchestrated terror campaign” with fires raging).

Many Serbs wanted to stay (some did, though few), but leadership pressure, fear from war propaganda, and incentives to relocate to Republika Srpska drove most out. ICTY verdicts (e.g., Karadžić’s conviction) highlight Bosnian Serb forces’ role in ethnic division policies.

It was not purely forced by Bosniak authorities; no large-scale evidence of Bosniak expulsions or home burnings against departing Serbs. Instead, the exodus is often called “self-organized ethnic cleansing” or voluntary under duress from Serb side.

Dodik’s framing aligns with Republika Srpska nationalist narratives (pride, refusal of “Muslim rule”), but omits leadership’s active role in encouraging/organizing the departure and destruction. It’s politically motivated revisionism.
