Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos: Serbs are settlers placed by Imperial Authority

Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos: Serbs were Roman slaves called “serbula” meaning “ragged shoes” (tzerboulianoi)

In the “De Administrando Imperio” (c. 948–952), Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos describes the Serbs as settlers placed in the Balkans by imperial authority. He also writes that the Serbs were slaves of the Romans and that “Serb” actually derives from “serbula” meaning “slave” or “Someone who wears cheap clothes”.
