Albanians of Razgrad, Poroishte and Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria

Various historical documents speak of Albanians (Arnaut) in the Bulgarian regions of Razgrad and Poroishte.

“… Rumors say that these local Albanians carried long ” Gegaliji rifles ” and bravely defended themselves against the Daali ( Kardzhali ) . who in groups of 2-300 men roamed the land , having a permanent camp in the fort …”1

The mosque of Razgrad was built by an Albanian lord

“… Albanian : Leka , Gjin , Skef and also names which point to a long cohabitation with or near Greeks ( Yani ) and … Razgrad , that the great mosque of the town was built by a Turkish lord of high rank who was of Albanian origin …”2

“… the rich village of Arnautköy (Bey Arnaut , today the village of Poroiste, which is united with Razgrad ) in the vicinity of Razgrad “3

“… Arnaut and Bej – Arnaut near Razgrad , older people still remember individual Albanian words. Numerous Albanian colonies were located around Provadija: in Dobrina (Dizdarköi), in the now Turkish Eski Arnautlar…”4

“… Arnaut i Kara – Arnaut in Razgradsko. Arnauts in the vicinity of Trnov speak a special Greek dialect, from which I cite a few words: pljalo (I run away), pljaliksa (I ran away), gorča, bulh. kruša (pear), gorčja (pear tree) …”5
