A recent investigation has raised serious concerns about the alleged use of Serbia’s diplomatic network for criminal activities. According to the findings, the Embassy of Serbia in Lisbon reportedly functioned in 2020 as a “logistic hub” for the trafficking of more than 100 kilograms of cocaine from South America into Europe. If confirmed, the implications would be deeply alarming—not only for Serbia’s international reputation but also for the integrity of diplomatic institutions.
Diplomatic missions exist to represent states, foster cooperation, and build trust between nations. The suggestion that an embassy could be used to facilitate drug trafficking fundamentally undermines that purpose. It also raises urgent questions about oversight, accountability, and the potential abuse of diplomatic protections.
The investigation further points to individuals allegedly involved in organizing the storage and transportation of drugs into Europe, including Milo Božović and Ivan Mijatović. Their alleged roles in managing logistics and distribution networks highlight how organized crime can intersect with political and institutional structures.
The Western Balkans has long struggled with powerful criminal networks that exploit geographic routes between continents. However, allegations that diplomatic channels might have been used to support such operations take the problem to a far more serious level. If embassies become shields for criminal logistics, the credibility of international diplomacy itself is placed at risk.
For Serbia, these allegations demand a transparent and independent investigation. Silence or denial without accountability would only deepen suspicion and damage trust with European partners. If the country seeks closer integration with European institutions, demonstrating a genuine commitment to combating organized crime is essential.
Ultimately, this case illustrates a broader challenge facing Europe: organized crime thrives where political protection, weak oversight, and international networks intersect. Confronting that reality requires not only policing criminal groups but also ensuring that state institutions—including embassies—cannot be exploited as tools of the very networks they should help dismantle.
