The Ottoman Document – Defter-i ARVANİD: A fragment from the tax records of Gjirokastër according to the registrations of the years 1431–1432

(Note: For those who keep writing to me asking “is this village listed” or “what about that village” — everything is recorded in the Defter-i Arvanid and will be shown. However, this requires long and time-consuming work. Starting from Saturday, there will be the first program, where the content will be presented in parts.

Considering that I also have a job and must work due to family obligations, I cannot deal with this matter 24/7. Those of you who are interested should be patient and wait, because I too need to provide for my family, just like you.)

As we see, in every village representatives of the administration of the Sublime Porte were appointed, who collected taxes for the state. The same is observed in other regions as well, where in a village the names of 30 or 40 households are listed—for example, out of 40 families, 39 are Christian and one is Muslim, and this latter one collects taxes on grain, pigs, agriculture, and livestock.
