After 28 years in prison in Germany, Serbian war criminal to be tried in Bosnia

The Hague-convicted Bosnian Serb Dragoljub Kunarac has been handed over to the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he will be tried again for war crimes against Bosniak civilians in Eastern Bosnia, having just completed the sentence imposed on him by the International Criminal Tribunal.

He served a 28-year prison sentence in Germany for several rape cases in 1992, which were convicted by the Hague Tribunal.

Kunarac will face trial before the BiH judiciary on new charges related to war crimes committed in the eastern part of the country. The BiH prosecution accuses Kunarac of war crimes committed in 1992 in the Foca region, including the murder of at least six Bosniak civilians, for which he has not been held accountable before the Hague Tribunal.

He is also accused of torture, deportation of Bosniak civilians and destruction of property, including the burning of houses, writes index.hr.

The crimes were committed as part of the persecution and ethnic cleansing of the Bosniak population, and Kunarac was the commander of the “Zhaga” special unit of the Army of Republika Srpska.

Kunarac, in fact, was sentenced in 2002 by the Hague Tribunal to 28 years in prison for crimes committed in Foca in 1992, when, as commander of a special unit of the Army of Republika Srpska, he participated in numerous crimes against the Bosnian civilian population. Kunarac became the first defendant convicted by the Hague Tribunal for the rape and torture of Bosnian women.

In addition to rape, Kunarac was also responsible for other crimes in Foca, including the burning of houses and property, as well as the deportation of the Bosniak population.

According to the indictment, his unit was key in committing criminal acts in this region, and many of the victims were civilians who were tortured, raped and brutally murdered.
