The Albanian Imam of the Border (Hoxhë Kufini) who opposed the Montenegrin annexation of Cakorr

The Albanian “Imam of the Border” (Hoxhë Kufini or Zeq Mehmetaj) who opposed the Montenegrin annexation of Albanian territories

This article is dedicated to Zeq Mehmetaj, an Albanian imam and politician, who became known for leading the protests with the Albanian highlanders of Rugova who opposed the annexation of Albanian land to Montenegro, known as “The Demarcation” in 2018.

In this interview made at the Kulla e Zhlebit (“The fortified tower of Zhleb”) Zeq explains that he led demonstrations with Albanians of Rugova against the cession of 8,200 square kilometers. Having discussed with local politicians and in the Albanian government, this cession continued nevertheless. Zeq explains that many toponyms in this region are of Albanian origin.

The interviewer also mentions that this local antenna tower had the sign “Radio Televizioni i Prishtines”. Now, the Montenegrin authorities have changed the sign to “Radio Televizia Crnagora”, meaning they had usurped the antenna.
