A new campaign titled “Freeze Serbia – Stop Funds – Stop Authoritarianism” is urging the European Union to immediately suspend all financial support and freeze Serbia’s EU accession process, citing concerns over corruption, authoritarian tendencies, and the government’s handling of massive public protests.
The campaign poster, featuring the Serbian flag alongside the EU flag with its circle of stars, presents a stark message: the EU should not finance regimes that drift toward autocracy. It highlights ongoing demonstrations in Serbia that have continued since 2024, accusing the government of widespread corruption and democratic erosion.
Why “Freeze Serbia”? According to the campaign, the EU must take decisive action for three main reasons:
- Stop EU funds to Serbia immediately
- Freeze the accession process
- Make no concessions to autocratic politics
The background section points to “massive protests since 2024 against corruption & government” and “warnings of democratic backsliding & authoritarian drift.” The poster includes dramatic nighttime images of large crowds gathered in Belgrade, with Serbian flags visible, suggesting significant public discontent in the capital and other cities.
Clear Demands: The campaign lists five specific demands directed at the European Union:
- Freeze all EU financial flows to Serbia
- Suspend Serbia’s EU candidate status
- Impose sanctions against political leadership
- Enforce free media & fair elections
- Ensure pro-Western alignment, not Russia
A prominent political message in red declares: “No EU for autocrats. Values are not negotiable.”
Europe Must Act: The poster argues that the European Union is “a community of values – not a financing system for authoritarian regimes.” It stresses that EU expansion should only be granted to “true democracies” and that a “clear line” must be drawn toward all candidate states.
This campaign reflects growing frustration among pro-European and pro-democracy voices both inside Serbia and within the EU regarding Belgrade’s trajectory. Serbia has long been an official EU candidate country, but progress has been repeatedly stalled over rule-of-law issues, media freedom concerns, and its balancing act between Brussels and Moscow.
Whether the European institutions will heed these calls remains to be seen, but the “Freeze Serbia” initiative adds visible pressure on EU decision-makers to tie funding and accession talks more strictly to verifiable democratic standards.
