On April 17, 1897, the San Francisco newspaper “The San Francisco Call” published an article titled “JANINA, THE CAPITAL OF ALBANIA.” The piece described Janina as “one of the most picturesque cities in European Turkey.” It also highlighted the city’s strategic importance during the 1897 crisis, noting the disruption of telegraph lines between Janina and the Turkish headquarters at Elassona.
Janina was a significant political and cultural center within the Ottoman-era Janina Vilayet and was regarded as a key hub of Southern Albania during the period of the Pashalik of Yanina (1787–1822). The city gained historical prominence as the stronghold of Ali Pasha of Tepelena, an Albanian ruler who governed much of Epirus, Western Greece, and parts of Albania as a de facto independent authority.
