Kostas Jiossas (Γιωσσάς): Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer argued that modern Greeks no longer carried “ancient Greek blood”

Kostas Jiossas says historian Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer argued that modern Greeks no longer carried “ancient Greek blood,” claiming that over centuries they had become a mixture of Albanians, Slavs, and other peoples. Jiossas emphasizes that Fallmerayer made this argument in 1835, shortly after the formation of the modern Greek state, during a period strongly influenced by European philhellenism and Bavarian political influence under King Otto of Greece. The argument presented is that the idea of direct continuity with classical Greece was, in Fallmerayer’s view, a constructed national myth.

“It was a very interesting discovery for me because he is a person who is practically hated by the Greeks, because while writing his book about the past of the Greeks, he said that the Greeks no longer had ancient Greek blood in their veins.

He said that such a mixture of cultures had taken place—Albanians, Slavs, etc.—that very little remained of the ancient blood, of the ancient Greek glory, and he said this in 1835, less than a decade after the formation of the new Greek state.

Which had just emerged from the War of Independence against the Turks and was strongly favored by the entire movement of European philhellenism, with a Greek king installed by the French, English, and Russians, who came from Bavaria, who was the second son of the King of Bavaria, Ludwig.

So by bringing to Greece this Bavarian spirit that had “rediscovered” classical Greece, he came to say that what you are talking about does not exist; you are trying to create a myth that no longer exists.”
