Critical review
The statement from Greek Reporter is heavily romanticized folklore mixed with some historical truth. Christos Davelis real name Christos Natsios c. 1832–1856 was a real 19th-century brigand active in Attica and Boeotia. However the portrayal as a beloved Greek Jesse James charming ladies man and noble outlaw is classic bandit myth-making.
He came from a family of shepherds with Arvanite-Vlach Arvanitovlach origins not ethnic Greek. This background was typical for many semi-nomadic pastoralist communities in central Greece at the time. He led a gang involved in highway robberies kidnappings and violence. He was killed in 1856 at around age 24. The cave on Mount Penteli Davelis Cave was his hideout but stories of hidden treasure are largely legendary.
The romantic elements ladies man beloved hero are exaggerated. In reality such brigands were often feared by the local population they preyed upon. Greek popular culture transformed him into a folk hero and outlets like Greek Reporter further sanitize and Hellenize his image.
Important note while he operated in the newly independent Greek state and is claimed as a Greek legend his ethnic roots were in the Arvanite-Vlach communities groups that were culturally and linguistically distinct from mainland Greeks. This detail is frequently downplayed or omitted in nationalist retellings.

These references consistently link his shepherd family background to Arvanite-Vlach (Arvanitovlach) pastoralist communities, which were common in 19th-century Boeotia and Epirus-origin groups in central Greece. Note that many mainstream Greek sources simply call him a “Greek brigand” and omit or downplay the ethnic detail.
