The Serbian colonies in Macedonia after 1885

Artur Vrekaj

According to the German deputy Wendel in response to the Bulgarian minister Rizoff, we learn that some Serbs appeared in Macedonia after the Serbo-Bulgarian war in 1885, because they believed in the authority of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Istanbul (Greek) and were suspected of receiving monthly payments from the Serbian consuls of Skopje, Monastir and Thessaloniki in exchange for identification as Serbs.

These Serbs came from the Serbian kingdom or Kosovo, and the Sanjak of New Bazaar. The Turks of Sultan Hamit and the Greeks of the Patriarchate of Istanbul helped these Serbs, because they wanted to weaken the Bulgarians in Macedonia.

Thus, the Serbian colonies in Macedonia were established at the end of the nineteenth century.
