The Illyrian tradition of being buried on top of a hill among the Albanian Malesori highlanders

Cited from the 1923 book “ПРВО ОДЕЉЕЊЕ НАСЕЉА и ПОРЕКЛО СТАНОВНИШТВА КЊИГА 15 МАЛЕСИЈА од УРЕДИО | АНДРИЈЕ ЈОВИЋЕВИЋА. ЈОВАН ЦВИЈИЋ”:

“Even today, it is customary among the Malisors to build cemeteries on small mounds, which are somewhat higher than ordinary mounds, and the entire hill is crowded with cemeteries. The Malisors prefer to be buried on a hill rather than on the side of a hill or in a plain. And the greatest honor is to be buried on the top of a hill, where an altar or a small chapel has been erected. Perhaps the mounds are the work of the Illyrians, who once inhabited the western part of the Balkan Peninsula, from whom today’s Arbanasis have survived.”
