The greatest merits for the peaceful passage of Serbs through Albania in 1915 are attributed to the Serb from Skopje, Smajo Ferovic.
Smajo Feroviqi, a well-known Serb from Skopje with a Muslim religion, came from the family of Omeragiq [actually they were Albanians, tribe Shala – St. transl.], descendants of Gucia, one of the oldest and most famous families in that province. His real surname was supposed to be Omeragiq, but he took the surname of his henchmen. His ancestors had been Christian Serbs, Islamized after the collapse of the medieval Serbian states.
In 1933, King Alexander told an Albanian leader about the withdrawal of the Serbian army through Albania in 1915: “My father and I, the Government and the General Staff should be thankful for our lives except because we are Kelmendas, because the Kelmendas ordered not to touch the man of their tribe, King Peter, because they will take revenge. Then they gave up”
