Quote:

“Vienna, August 9th. The Demon of Brandy. Fifty men of quite pleasant social standing—retired military men, businessmen, civil servants—founded a purely social club four years ago in Leopoldstadt, which they called “The Serbian Society.” They chose a brandy bar on Nordbahnstraße as their daily meeting place, and at their gatherings they drank only ordinary rotgut. In a separate room, they sat for hours every day with their poisonous drink, often having their food brought there. In less than a year, the demon of brandy had so completely gripped them that they could no longer let go. They continued to drink the rotgut, becoming increasingly depraved, and in the last two years, no fewer than forty-seven members of this club, all between the ages of 35 and 45, have been carried off by death. Terrible but true”.
