Serbian Military Suicides and Self-Mutilations in 1876

Cited:

“Pashkany. November 14th. On Monday, after a break of several days, about eighty armed Russians in uniform passed through here again. The Russian officers and wounded returning from the battlefield have little flattery to offer about their Serbian comrades-in-arms, who are said to completely lack any organization, discipline, or fighting spirit. After the Serbs discarded their rifles and cartridges, they are killing themselves en masse or mutilating themselves. These are said to be the causes of the defeats suffered. According to the returning Russian officers, there are only 4,000 Russian combatants in Serbia in total.”
