Suhareka – the first in the Balkans with an interactive map of Towers (Kulla) and Museums

Suhareka – the first in the Balkans with an interactive map of Towers (Kulla) and Museums

If we search the internet, we will find that several Balkan cities have developed interactive maps for the promotion of cultural heritage and tourism. For example, Dubrovnik has an interactive map of museums, Thessaloniki offers maps of historical monuments, Sofia has interactive platforms for cultural heritage, Plovdiv presents the museums of the old town in digital form, while Sarajevo promotes the historical and tourist area of Baščaršija through interactive maps.

A project that combines in a single platform museums, traditional towers, photographs, historical descriptions, precise localization on the map, QR Code and information maps physically placed next to each object , has been implemented for the first time in the Municipality of Suhareka.

This project was conceived and implemented by the NGO GIS & Software Solution and was inaugurated on June 13 , on the Liberation Day of Suhareka, and was supported by BG ING to be placed in all Towers and Museums of this municipality.

The interactive map includes three museums of particular historical importance:

  • Suhareka City Museum , which preserves and presents the historical heritage of the municipality;
  • The Berisha Family Martyrs Museum , where evidence of the genocide committed by Serbian forces against the Berisha Family is preserved, during which 49 family members were killed, while only three managed to survive;
  • The House-Museum of Hero Fadil Vata , one of the most important figures of the Albanian national resistance, who from a young age was engaged in patriotic activity and, despite imprisonment and torture, never retreated from the ideal of freedom.

The project also presents the most important historical towers of the Municipality of Suhareka.

The Tower of Ramë Bllacë in Bllacë is a symbol of national resistance. It was built by the National Hero Ramë Bllacë in response to the policies of the displacement of Albanians from Kosovo. After his assassination, his children continued the patriotic mission.

The Tower of Resistance in Samadrajxë is dedicated to the 22 men of this village, killed during the period 1912–1945, some of whom lost their lives in the Tivar Massacre and in other places outside Kosovo.

The Tower of Jonuz Hasan Tafollit , in the mountain village of Çadrak, is one of the most monumental towers in the region and served as a center for organizing Albanian patriots and holding meetings of national importance.

Part of the project are also the Freedom Towers in Krušicë e Epërme, Budakovë, Bllacë and Dobërdelan, erected in honor of the martyrs, fighters and veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army, who sacrificed for the country’s freedom.

An information map has been placed on each of these towers. The map contains two QR codes: one orients the visitor to the exact location of the object, while the other connects them to the interactive platform, where there are photographs, historical descriptions and detailed information in six different languages. This project represents a modern model of interpretation and promotion of cultural heritage, combining GIS technology, interactive maps and multilingual information to make historical heritage more accessible to citizens and local and international tourists.

This is the 4th project of this organization after: the Map of Natural and Cultural Historical Monuments under Protection of the Municipality of Suhareka, the Tourist Catalog of the Municipality and City of Suhareka, and the Orientation Map of the City of Suhareka.
