“Turkey-Montenegrin Atrocities. From Antivari, April 5th, we received the following report: The Montenegrins continue to ravage the neighboring Turkish territories with malicious attacks and devastate them with their usual barbarity. Just recently, they broke into Kranika (Krajë) and Scestani (Shestan), burning down not only the Catholic church and the Catholic rectory, but also 140 other houses, mostly inhabited by Catholics. Elderly women and children—in short, all the helpless who had not fled in time—were mercilessly slaughtered.

To escape the fate of their unfortunate fellow believers in Scestani, the Catholics of neighboring villages Lipaci, along with their priest Peter Barnaba from Persignano on the Spiaggia, left their homes and fled to Antivari. Since Upper Scestani is now under Montenegrin rule, it is unfortunately certain that the Catholic churches of Dedai and Guiza will also fall victim to the flames.

At the same time, the Montenegrins attacked Muricki (Muriqi) and they renewed their attack attempt against Shpuzë (Spuz), on which occasion they plundered and burned the villages of Dahlian, Grobacet, and Verame. Notwithstanding these latest incidents, and not to mention the earlier attacks on Scestani, Murik, Creniza, Seza, Podgoriza, and Spuz, Prince Nicolaus responds to every complaint by categorically denying any shifting of the border by the Montenegrins and solemnly swearing to maintain neutrality towards the Porte. How much longer will this port, which has chosen its favorite victims, the Catholic Christians, retain the support and sympathy of civilized Europe?”

Montenegrin attack against BIileca

“Trebigne, May 13th. The Montenegrin Senator Vukotic has taken up positions in Duga and Bosaga with several thousand men and is said to be planning an attack on Turkish territory. The Montenegrins plundered and burned a village near Bileschia (Bileća).”
