The Horgos Massacre of 2005: The Murder of the Hungarian Szálma family

The perpetrators and the person who ordered the heinous act remain unknown.

It has been 18 years since unknown perpetrators, most likely hitmen, literally murdered and exterminated the six-member Szlama family in Horgos. Our newspaper commemorates the anniversary of this terrible crime at the beginning of each year. Unfortunately, we can only report to our readers every year that the murderers of the Szlama family are still not behind bars. The identities of the perpetrators of the cruel massacre remain shrouded in mystery. Almost two decades were not enough for law enforcement agencies to track down the perpetrators.

The six-member Szalma family was brutally liquidated in Horgos on January 24, 2005. The parents, grandparents, and two minor children were murdered under cover of night. Unfortunately, it is not even entirely clear on which day the terrible crime was committed, as it was only a week later that neighbors and relatives noticed that something was wrong with the Szalma family’s house, as none of them showed up in the village and the children did not go to school.

Eight days passed before the frozen bodies of the six victims were found in the two family houses in Horgos built next to each other on February 1. The killers first killed the grandparents in the old house, then quietly entered under cover of night and stabbed 65-year-old József Szalma and his 59-year-old wife to death.

The newly built house was home to 40-year-old Nándor and his 34-year-old wife, Nelli, as well as their two children, 8-year-old Bettina and 12-year-old Dávid. The cruel killers did not spare the children either. They presumably killed them with a silenced weapon. The neighbors heard nothing, did not notice any abnormalities around the Szalmás’ house. No one heard any suspicious movement or noise around the Szalma family’s house.

The investigation into the horrific murder case was led from the very beginning by the organized crime prosecutor’s office and the Subotica prosecutor’s office. Unfortunately, there is little hope that the mystery of the unprecedented murder with six victims will be solved. The police have issued statements from time to time stating that there is no closed murder case and that the investigation is ongoing.

However, they have not been able to produce any results. For years, the Hungarian tabloid press has been reporting that Nándor Szalma may have been killed by a millionaire businessman from Csongrád County, to whom Nándor owed a lot of money.

Nándor Szalma was a businessman, he traded apples, but he also had a large apple orchard. Some believed that he was involved in suspicious transactions in Hungary, smuggling alcohol and cigarettes. The victim allegedly left behind a large fortune, in addition to the house and orchard in Horgos, a cold storage and several unfinished buildings, and he even had two houses in Szeged.
