A Century and a Half of Constant Lies about the alleged suffering of Serbs in Kosovo

A Century and a Half of Constant Lies about the alleged suffering of Serbs in Kosovo

By Adil FETAHU

A lie as a philosophical category means a false statement about a thing, a place or an event. Viewed from this philosophical aspect, those who do not know the essential meaning of a lie may confuse it with untruth. But there is an essential difference here. A person can tell a lie unintentionally, out of ignorance, out of lack of accurate information about what he is saying, out of delusion.

Meanwhile, a lie is told with a specific purpose, consciously, with a background and strategy to achieve something based on delusion and deception of the other party with a lie. A lie can be used by an individual, but it can also be used by an organization, party, institution, state, for certain interests and purposes.

Here we are not talking about the lies of individuals, but about the same collective lie of the institutions of Serbian society that has been repeated and spread against Albanians for nearly a century and a half.

We have the impression that there is no people or state in the world that uses lies more than Serbian society and the state of Serbia, with all its social structures, consciously and strategically, for certain motives and purposes.

In Serbian society, lies have become a mental illness, a pathology, to create hatred towards other peoples, especially towards Albanians, Bosniaks and Croats, and to present the Serbian people as victims. And this pathology of Serbian lies dates back to at least the time of the Eastern Crisis and the Berlin Congress, and to the present day, with a real possibility of continuing as long as there are Serbs in this world!

They also have the habit of glorifying everything that is Serbian, falsifying history and data, taking the values and personalities of other peoples and appropriating them as their own, to the point of calling themselves a heavenly people, while denigrating, despising and belittling everyone else around them with the lowest characteristics and fabrications.

And this self-glorification in a way contradicts the constant lies about the suffering, the victim, the injustices, the sacrifices, the crimes, the genocide that the supposedly Serbian population has experienced and is experiencing and is suffering from the Albanians, the Croats and the Bosniaks.

Factories for fabricating and spreading lies, with well-thought-out motives, goals and strategies, are: the Serbian Orthodox Church with all its potential, the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Writers’ Association, writers and poets, various associations and organizations, the media, state security and diplomacy, and other segments of Serbian society and the state.

They fabricate lies with the most perfidious methods, in the smallest details, in an attempt to make them credible to the subject to whom they are destined. And they repeat them over and over again, adding new and more dramatized lies. The Archbishop of the Serbian Church, Porfirije, orders that complaints about the suffering of the Serbian people of Kosovo, always and everywhere be repeated.

They spread them through the means of information, written and electronic, through the publication of numerous books, translation into other languages and distribution to the four corners of the world, in contacts with foreign personalities, through diplomatic channels and in all other possible forms and ways. They have published dozens of books about the alleged genocide of Albanians against the Serbs of Kosovo.

The Serbian Church leads in this propaganda, with its publications, but other segments of Serbian society and the state are not left behind. They are so absurd and contradictory that when they talk about the history of Albanians they say that they came to Kosovo in the 17th century, while when they talk about the suffering of Serbs by Albanians, they say: ”Albanian genocide over the Serbian people from the 16th to the 21st century” (Prof.dr.Novica Vojinović: ”Genocid siptara nad Srbima na Kosovu i Metohija od 16.do 21.vijeka”).

Even Hitler’s Goebbels would have been jealous of their mastery of fiction and propaganda. Their lies have reached the peak of their effect when the fabricators themselves and the entire Serbian people consider them to be the truth! And, as Mark Twain says: ‘ ‘By the time the truth has put on its shoes, the lie has traveled halfway around the world”.

Those who have less followed this all-Serbian phenomenon usually associate Serbian lies with the Kalmyk Dobrica Qosiq, but this is not true. The Serbian lie was created long before Qosiq was born. He only gave the characteristics and qualification of the Serbian lie, which you will learn from the end of this article.

The ”White Book” with lies and dark chronicles

Without delving into history, for which we have no knowledge or information, we can affirm that the Serbian institutional lie began after the Congress of Berlin, when Serbia was recognized as an independent state by the great powers and the territory conquered in the Russo-Serbian wars against the Ottoman Empire was recognized, these territories being mainly Albanian, which Serbia ethnically cleansed, expelling, killing and massacring those who had not managed to flee, which was the first genocide on European soil.

Albanians expelled from the region of Toplica, Niš, Prokuplje and Kuršumlija and over 700 villages there, by the genocidal actions of the Serbian state, settled wherever they could in Kosovo, Macedonia and Turkey.

The Serbian state did not leave the Muhajirs who had come to Kosovo alone. It accused them and Albanians in general of committing oppression against Serbs, in the most brutal forms: murder, injury, kidnapping, robbery and rape of women, forcing them to convert to Islam, robbery of property, burning of houses, desecration of cemeteries, churches and monasteries, etc., etc. They use this style and language of lies and slander to this day.

As early as 1898, the Serbian government had prepared the “White Book”, with lies and dark chronicles, about the oppression that the Albanians were allegedly inflicting on the Serbian population in Kosovo. The data with the names of people and places on various occasions had been collected by Serbian and Russian priests and consuls, and had been processed and prepared for the “White Book” by a center in Belgrade, while the book was published (1899) in Serbian and French by the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The “White Book”  is entitled:  “Prepiska o arbanaskim nasiljima u Staroj Srbiji od 1898 do 1899.godine” (Exchange of letters on Albanian violence in Old Serbia in the years 1898 to 1899).  ‘ The ‘White Book”  was prepared on the eve of the first Conference on Peace and Disarmament, which was held in The Hague, from May to July 1899.

The Serbian government, headed by the most vulgar anti-Albanian, Vladan Đorđević, had thought well to present that book, about the alleged violence of Albanians against Christians, at the Conference, where 26 countries participated, but also to send it to all the governments of the countries of Europe and beyond, as a form of complaint against the Albanians and against the Ottoman Empire. Because the head of the government (Đorđević) was ill at the time, the book was not presented at the Conference, but of course it was given to all the delegations and sent to the countries.

In that book, in addition to internal communication in the collection, systematization and processing of “data”, it also deals with communication between the Government of Serbia and the Ottoman Empire, respectively between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, through the Serbian ambassador in Istanbul (Stojan Novakovic).

The book lists over 400 alleged “crimes” committed by Albanians against the Serbian population in Kosovo in the last four years. The book highlights Haxhi Zeka as the catalyst of violence against Christians, who returned to Peja from Istanbul, and with all the honors paid to him, he made life unbearable for Christians in those parts.

Even before the ‘ ‘White Book” was published , the Prime Minister of Serbia, Vladan Đorđević, on April 14, 1898, had forwarded the ”collected data” to Ambassador Novaković in Istanbul, with orders that he forward it to the government of the Empire, with a request that that government investigate the cases and punish the guilty.

Ambassador Novakovic, from the 400 cases listed in the material sent, had extracted 91 of the most “drastic” cases and in the form of a memorandum had submitted to the Foreign Minister of the Empire, Tefik-Pasha, a note requesting that the imperial government form a commission to investigate the cases and punish the guilty. He requested that a representative of the Serbian government be included in the commission.

Ambassador Novakovic contacted the Turkish minister Tefik-Pasha several times, always adding new cases of “Albanian violence” against the Serbian population, and with new figures for the displacement of 60,000 Serbs, due to the oppression of the Albanians! In the accompanying note of the Memorandum that on May 26, 1898, Ambassador Novaković handed over to the Turkish minister, among other things, he wrote:

Mr. Minister, during the last four years, the royal government (of Serbia, yj) has been forced to warn the imperial government (of Turkey, yj) about the disorders, riots and countless cases of violence that the undisciplined and unsubdued Albanian population is causing on the border with Serbia, crossing the border and killing civilians and Serbian gendarmes. These attacks and crimes are mainly directed against the Serbian Christian population and it is clear that the aim is to eliminate the Serbs from those parts. /…/ The royal government cannot watch these events calmly, because it considers it its right and duty to take care of its own people”.

The imperial government had its own permanent commissioner, Colonel Ali-bey, who supervised the border between the Vilayet of Kosovo and Serbia and Montenegro, but it had also sent a special emissary (Sadedin-pasha) to verify the claims of the Serbian government about violence against the Christian population. The special emissary had conducted field investigations, summoning and taking statements from persons who had been mentioned as victims in the Memorandum of the Serbian government.

The statements of the interviewed persons had denied the claims and lies of the Serbian government about the violence of Albanians against the Serbian population. After the report made by the Turkish emissary, Minister Tefik-Pasha, in his response to the Memorandum of the Serbian government, wrote that the numerous cases mentioned in the Memorandum were fabricated or exaggerated:

“The imperial power immediately took measures to find and punish the guilty. We do not cease to carefully pursue the culprits, but the victims do not report the cases unless they want to take revenge themselves. It has been observed that these actions are common, committed without distinction by both Muslims and Christians, and such events occur everywhere in the world and are not political in nature. They do not have the weight that you describe, when the period of the last four years is taken into account.

If any Christians, whose number is not as you emphasize, move from the territory of the Empire, they do not do so because of violence from the Albanians, but to escape the obligation and not to pay taxes to the state and to escape judgment for some crime or deed they have committed. The events that occurred on the border were not caused by the Albanians, as you blame them in your note, but by the smugglers and Serbian and Montenegrin thugs, whom you have placed in the area along the border line.

It is a pity that the king and the government of Belgrade have not taken any action against them. “Request your king to order measures to be taken as soon as possible and punish the Serbs, so  that order and security at the border can be guaranteed ,” Tefik-Pasha wrote in his response to the Serbian Government’s note.

The exchange of letters, notes and replies between the government of Serbia and the government of the Turkish Empire in that period was intense. All the letters and notes of the government of Serbia, as well as in the ‘ ‘White Book” , are full of lies, fabrications, insinuations, constructions about the alleged violence of Albanians against the Serbian population in Kosovo.

From reading those letters from 130 years ago, it is seen that apart from the new names and circumstances, even today there are no changes in the mentality and narrative of Serbian lies against Albanians, but that today, thanks to new technology, the possibility of spreading those lies and denials is faster and wider.

And surprisingly, international factors easily swallow Serbian lies without chewing them, and instead of punishing Serbia for spreading lies, they punish Kosovo for trying to protect itself from Serbia’s hybrid violence.

There are few personalities in the world who have first investigated Serbian lies. One of them was Whitney Warren, a member of the American delegation at the Paris Peace Conference (1919), when he spoke about the injustice that had been done with the abolition of the state of Montenegro, on the occasion of the formation of the Serbo-Croatian-Slovenian Kingdom. Warren had said at that Conference:

It is a crime that Montenegro has been erased from the map of the world and for that crime we must repent. When Serbia unleashed violence against Montenegro, no one raised a hand against that violence. Why? Because Serbia lied successfully, while the conscience of the people who hate lies has not yet discovered it. “If we allow the Balkan lie to be seen as truth, we will destroy the foundations of our freedom .”

Qosiqi on Serbian lies

The controversial Serbian writer, academic and politician Dobrivoje Cosic, who was called the “father of the Serbian nation”, in his definition of the Serbian lie, mentioned its causes, method and purpose:

We lie to deceive ourselves, to console others, we lie out of pity for others, we lie out of shame, we lie to encourage, we lie to hide our misery, we lie for the sake of honor. We lie for the sake of freedom. Lying is a form of Serbian patriotism and a confirmation of our innate intelligence. We lie creatively and imaginatively, inventively. Lying is a Serbian state interest, lying is in the very being of the Serb. Every lie (repeated a thousand times, vj) eventually becomes the truth. “Serbia has been saved so many times throughout history by lies,” says Qosiqi in his novel “Deobe” (1961).

In October 2020, posters with Cosic’s photo and text about the national lie were displayed throughout the city of Kotor (Montenegro). In a conversation with a journalist from ”Vijesti” about the poster, the most famous Serbian economist, Branko Dragash, only reinforces the analysis of Cosic’s thesis about the Serbian lie. Analyzing the current situation in Serbia, Dragash says, among other things:

“‘f we want to become a developed and wealthy state, then we must defeat ourselves and finally eradicate the Serbian lie that we have been served with for centuries. It is a lie that we Serbs are a heavenly people, it is a lie that other civilizations have emerged from us, it is a lie that we have given our language to other Slavic peoples, it is a lie that we are great warriors who would defeat any force, it is a lie that we are the most intelligent people in the world who can benefit by deception to the detriment of other peoples, who are not available  and whom we ridicule and belittle, in order to feed our megalomania and sick subjectivity …”.

And Serbia shamelessly continues to fabricate, fabricate and spread lies about violence against the Serbian people in Kosovo, which is the most privileged people in Europe, with international agreements, with the Constitution and with the laws of Kosovo.

But, the Serbian church, the Academy of Serbia and other segments of the Serbian society and state continue to publish, translate, distribute around the world and promote books and pamphlets with lies, supposedly about the violence of Albanians against Serbs and against their churches. Dozens of books with Serbian myths and lies bear bombastic titles: ”Albanian Genocide against the Serbian People”, for different periods from the 16th century to the present day.

It is surprising how they have not registered, in order to protect, the ”Serbian National Lie” at UNESCO as an indigenous cultural value, which has saved Serbs throughout history, as Qosiqi admits.
