The French botanist, geographer, and geologist, Ami Boue (1794 – 1881), born in the city of Hamburg, Germany, during the years 1836 – 37 made a trip to the Balkans, which at that time belonged to the Ottoman Empire.
In 1840, Bue compiled in four volumes (each with 400 large pages), his impressions of his trip to Southeast Europe. In his voluminous volumes on Ottoman possessions in Europe, Boue describes with scientific precision, like no one before, the wealth of the country and the people in the Balkans.
His scientific accuracy was highly appreciated even by the Serbs themselves. Academician Aleksandar Belić wrote that “Bue’s Books are a true encyclopedia, which cannot be compared in accuracy to any other publication of this kind.”
According to Boue’s books, Serbia at that time had less than 900 thousand inhabitants, while Albania had one (1) million and 600 thousand inhabitants. Consequently, in the mid-19th century there were many more Albanians than Greeks and twice as many Albanians as Serbs.
