Speech delivered on April 15, 2009 at the Memorial Rally
Written by: Ismail Gashi Slovenia
Today we are gathered here, in front of the large memorial complex on the Hill of the Cemetery of the Martyrs and Fallen Slovenians, in a special circumstance. Today we are here to commemorate and thank the martyrs of freedom for the Republic of Kosovo, now a sovereign and independent state. The finalization of this just historical, national and human demand has its initiative in past generations and times, the Statehood and identity of Kosovo has its starting point from the scars of our glorious grandfathers and fathers. This Fortress of Independence, which we have been enjoying for over a year, was built by war, blood and life given on the battlefields, and culminated with the sounds of weapons of the fighters of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
Honorable guests! The Serbian occupying system, in order to carry out the holocaust against Albanians, from Garashanin to “Patkoi”, continuously sowed the ugliness of hatred against Albanians. The Serbian greed, with destruction and destruction, theft and looting, aimed to prevent the return of Albanians to their lands after ethnic cleansing.
In Slovi, ten years ago, 45 of our loved ones fell martyrs for freedom, and 12 other Slovians were seriously and slightly injured. This happened because Slovi, for the Serbian occupier, was a burden for the political and military contribution they had made to the KLA. On April 15, 1999, after razing the village of Akllap, at noon they attacked the village of Slovi.
These hyena forces killed Albanian citizens. They violently expelled the entire Albanian population. They ransacked their homes and destroyed and looted many of their material and spiritual values. The next day, on April 16, the Slovians, sheltered from this violence in the “Lugu e Demès”, experienced the Night of Bartholomew. This lubi, that night, with wind and storm, rain and cold, as if from the violence and barbarity of medieval Serbia, even the weather was disturbed.
In front of and in the hands of their parents, wives and children, they terrorized and executed 17 Albanian citizens, whose bodies, the family members did not manage to bury until the next day. Of all the killed Slovenians, 6 were elderly people up to the age of 90, 4 of them immobile.
The bodies buried in Lugu i Dema, in order to eliminate the crime, were sent by the dinosaur to the secret mass graves in Batajnica, Slovenians and all of us, today and continuously, will demand that the perpetrators of the crimes be brought to justice, for whom for ten years now there has been silence and nothing has been done.
The uniqueness of our martyrs and martyrs, since the Legendary Commander Adem Jashari, is the difference. Because from here began the unification of the time differently. From here the world began to think, speak and act in Albanian.
When for the Albanians of Kosovo begins an era, and a new state philosophy, a life and a new political thought and actions. Today the geography of the cemeteries of martyrs and martyrs of freedom, testifies to the identity of our national pride, the positive tradition of historical glory.
We will remember April 1999, not to create hatred, but to preserve historical memory and national morality. We will remember it to create values for the democratic state of Kosovo. That is why here in Slovi, as in Prekaz, Likoshan, Qirez, Recak, Koshare, Gllogjan, Izbice, Zhegoc, Verbicë and Tërbovc, Ribar, Hallaq and many other places in Kosovo, which for Albanian history are facts and evidence of time and events. The military and political action of the KLA, in alliance with the global military and political force NATO, expelled the murderous Serbian violence from these Albanian spaces. It enabled the Albanians to return to their homeland.
This morality obliges us to fulfill our trusts to the martyrs, the people and the homeland. Therefore, today it is a historical necessity of the political class that, from the independence of the state of Kosovo, we journey towards the fulfillment of historical and national obligations. Our martyrs gave the most precious and beloved, their lives, for the most precious, the freedom of the people and the liberation of the Albanian lands. Our martyrs are the point from which we must start with an oath, and where we must return to thank you for every state and national activity.
Today and always, we respectfully bow before cemeteries, tombstones, and memorials, just as we do here today before the memorials erected in honor of the Slovenian martyrs of freedom.
Dear guests,
Today more than in the year after independence. Before the 45 martyrs and those who fell for freedom, we bow with respect because their lives brought freedom to Kosovo.
