“Serbian World” is a term with which, in mid-2020, some Serbian intellectuals and politicians are updating the connections of Serbs in Serbia with those living in neighboring countries. Some of the defenders of the “Serbian World” speak of the state connection of Serbs in a state community, while others speak of the cultural, economic and other connections of Serbs in neighboring countries – with Serbia.
Some authors emphasize the similarity between the concept of Serbization and the “Russian World” (Russian: Русский мир) presented in 1999 in the article “The Russian World and Russian Transnationality” by the author Pyotr Shchedrovicky. He was a political consultant associated with the Kremlin. Since 2022, through the Publishing House “Russkiy Myr”, this concept has been promoted as an official project of the Russian Federation. In the past decades, the aforementioned concept was used to realize Russia’s claims to control the societies of neighboring states.
The connection between Greater Serbia and the Serbian World – During 2021, Aleksandar Vulini became one of the main defenders of the concept of the “Serbian World”. In neighboring countries, this concept is seen as a rebranded (renewed) Greater Serbia. In June 2021, commenting on the concept of the “Serbian World”, Vulini said about Greater Serbia: “Unfortunately, Greater Serbia never existed, because if it had, we would have known where we live and what our ethnic spaces are.”
In mid-September 1921, the then President of Montenegro Milo Đukanović (1962- ) paid an official visit to the Republic of Croatia. On this occasion, he declared: “The concept of the Serbian World is a euphemism for the old concept of Greater Serbia, used by contemporary politicians who lead Serbia.”
Djukanovic’s statement was responded to by the then Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vulin. On September 23, 2021, in a statement published on the official website of that Ministry, Vulin said: “The Serbian world is an idea of the political unification of Serbs and has existed for centuries before me; it was especially popular in Montenegro, in fact, before some Serbs discovered that we were Montenegrins.
Anyone who has recognized the fake state of Kosovo has no right to talk about the inviolability of borders and must be ready to accept the consequences of their decisions. The principle of the inviolability of borders must start with Serbia.”
Serbian historian Aleksandar Raković (1972- ) says: “According to Aleksandar Vulin’s model, the Serbian World actually means the state connection of Serbs,” meaning that all Serbs, wherever they are in the region, should live in one state, in Serbia, in Greater Serbia.
Serbia is still large today because it has with it and under it: Eastern Kosovo (Presevo, Bujanovac, Medvedja); Sandzak inhabited by Bosniaks; and Vojvodina inhabited by 26 communities and ethnic groups, such as Hungarians and others.
As you can see, Aleksandar Vulin, already declared persona non grata in the US, threatened Milo Djukanovic. As of December 2022, this man has been serving as the director of the Security Information Agency. What kind of people are leading Serbia! How can Washington, Berlin, London and Paris allow politicians with medieval ideas to exist in a part of democratic Europe!
Professor of the Institute of International Affairs at Johns Hopkins University, Daniel Serwer (Daniel Serwer, 1945- ), in 2021, calls the concept of the Serbian World “a heated version of Greater Serbia”, where the leading circles of Serbia aim to achieve – for now without violence – the unification of Serbia with various territories inhabited by ethnic Serbs in neighboring countries, based on the significant support of Russia. Neighboring states would never accept such a claim. The aforementioned concept poses a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
Note: Aleksandar Vulin (1972- ) is a Serbian politician, lawyer, journalist, former member of the Serbian Parliament, former Minister of Defense, former Director of the so-called Office for Kosovo and Metohija in the Government of Serbia, former Minister of Labor, Employment, Veterans’ Affairs and Social Affairs since 2014; former Minister of Internal Affairs. He began his political career in the League of Communists-Movement for Yugoslavia.
He is one of the founders of the Yugoslav Left. In 2000, he formed the Party of the Democratic Left. In 2002, with the Democratic Socialist Party of Milorad Vučelić (1948- ), he entered the collective membership of the Socialist Party of Serbia, from which, in 2006, he withdrew. In 2014, Vulin was appointed by the Serbian government as chairman of the Council for the Advancement of the Position of Roma. In 2020-2022, he was Minister of Internal Affairs. Since December 2022, he has served as director of the Security Information Agency. He is close to Vladimir Putin (1952- ). Washington has declared him persona non grata.
In April 2016, the Croatian Government banned him from entering Croatian territory.
