The sun has illuminated the memorial to her murdered son, as it caresses his cheeks without stopping. She is removing Sami’s goods through the photograph there, whose youth is being snatched away at the age of 20.

The elderly woman from the village of Brovinë has taken the chair with her to sit for hours near where the body of her beloved lies. His remains are barely reunited, after the Meja massacre, where 376 others suffered the same fate.

Age and boredom have not erased the terrible memories of this massacre.

Mother Tixha from the village of Brovinë in Gjakova lives with the pain of her son, who was taken from her life by Serbian paramilitaries.

“It’s my son’s (grave) that they killed here in Mejë, 22-23 years ago today. We’re always upset like this. What can we do…. Then they shoot at us, they stop here, their hands behind their backs, their knees on the ground. Where we left them, we didn’t dare stop them, until we heard the screams that they killed them there. Now they’ve sent us to Albania, we’ve gone to Prizren and there they had to kill us, putting knives to our throats, asking for money, but we went to Albania for Albania,” she said.

She added that she is finding it difficult to live with this pain, but there is no way to change it.

“By God, yes, the death of my son, my husband, my three brothers, all of them. What can we do? If you want to live, stay, and make it ours,” she added.

On the 24th anniversary of this massacre, near the many graves in Mejë, the parents who left their children in pain were also remembered. Mire Ndreca tells KosovaPress about her mother who was killed on April 27, 1999.

“We never forget, this day is an unforgettable day. It makes you sad when you remember how they went. They killed us, they sent us to Serbia and brought us back after they were reburied… We have been through enough horror, through TV and radio, without knowing it, everyone fleeing,” she told KosovaPress.

The Serbian state did not spare even minors. Ajshe Avdyli remembers Bajrushi, who was 16 at the time.

“Neither the earth nor the sky can do how hard it is. Very hard, only God has done it… they stopped everyone, us and my brother-in-law here in Meja, they untied us from the tractor and gathered us in the column… Neither the earth nor the sky can do this massacre that was done in that place,” she added.

Ajshja said that the institutions have done nothing to bring justice to all those killed.

“They have done nothing, they are not doing anything on this earth, they are doing enough for themselves, no one else for anyone else,” she concluded.

24 years ago, 377 Albanians were killed by Serbian paramilitaries.

Kosovo still does not know the fate of more than 1,600 people killed and missing during the last war in Kosovo.
