International quotes and citations about the history of Serbia and Serbs

This article cites quotes from international writers, politicians and officials who expressed certain views and opinions about the history of Serbia and the Serbs.

Cited:

Greek writer, Nikita Akonimat, who spent alot of time studying Serbians wrote:

“Serbians were always willing to commit all kinds of crimes so that they can stay in power, and as chauvinists, there is no such nation in the world.”

The writer Friedrich Kraus, when studying the characteristics of Serbia, wrote:

“A Serbian chetnik is ready to rob a political ally or somebody else for that matter and before he kills that person, he will take out his eyes, cut off his nose and tongue. If he does not do any of these things he
will eat that man as if he was a lamb.”

The writer C. Robert, a Frenchman, wrote in one of his
works:

“When Serbian chetniks rose us and revolted, they only had one thing in mind; get rich in any way possible. What the chetniks did when they entered Belgrade was not worthy of civilized people. At first they robbed, and confiscated, then raped women that they met on the streets, afterwards killing many of them. Those people that did not want to convert to the Serbian Orthodox religion were tortured by unbelievable methods while they were cutting up their children in pieces….”

Cvijic, “O nacionalnom radu”, commemorative speach 1907
reprinted in Govon i Clanci, 1, Beograd 1921, p51-76):

“The world must know and realize that Serbia can operate with a much larger entity that the territory it now holds. The greatest possible territorial transformations may take place with Serbia. And we must not flinch from this fear pouring into the world if it is useful to our national interests”

– British writer Durham, after her travels and studies of the peoples of the Balkans, wrote: “The Servians (Serbs) are the most backward people and at the same time the most megalomaniacal and chauvinistic. Often their extremism borders on paranoia”.

British Prime Minister: Winston Churchill said at the Yalta conference: “To achieve peace and tranquility in Europe it is necessary to destroy not only the imperialism of Germany, but also the imperialist chauvinism of little Serbia”.

Romanian historian Konrad Bercovici wrote: “The Serbs are nationalists, endless megalomaniacs without faith, they are the most chauvinistic people in Europe, if not the whole world, it is impossible to argue with the Serbs, because they are without reason. They should be beaten because they respect only force”.

The British daily newspaper “Manchester Guardian” of August 3, 1914 reported: “If Servia (Serbia) could be dragged to the middle of the ocean and sunk, then the air of Europe would be purified.”

Historian Gathorn Hardy stated: “If the conflict with Servia (Serbia) could be localized, we can be sure that the overwhelming sympathy in Great Britain would be for punishing the hordes of nationalist gangs.”

– Sigmund Neumann wrote: “The history of Serbia is an endless struggle burdened with violence without borders, unknown among civilized countries. In that struggle in which lies, deceit, betrayal and revenge, murder and crime, were recognized as normal rules, the Serbian generation and Chetniks, like-minded people of General Mihailović, grew up, and this can easily explain the political banditry that characterizes Serbian rulers, political and military leaders.”

– Greek scholar George A. Megas devoted several years to studying the ethics and morals of the Serbian people and concluded:

“The Serbian fighter does not know the terrain of heroism. He likes brutal rampage, actions: gouging out the eyes and maiming the enemy when he is unarmed and for any motives.”

The Russian Academy of Sciences and Arts and Russian historian Alexander Mayorov have determined that the Servians are not necessarily an ethnos or people but rather a social status; “Serv – Servant”.

In the book “History of the Serbian People, Fourth Book, Volume I, Serbs in the 18th Century”, (Belgrade 1986, p. 321), academician of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts Radovan Samardžić writes:

“The Serbian people in Turkey had to be completely renewed in the 18th century in order to re-enter the historical scene in the fight for liberation If it had to be renewed to come out again on the “historical” stage, it means that he had disappeared from that scene.”

A little later, on the same page, Samardžić writes:

“…after the conclusion of the Belgrade Peace Treaty in 1739, at that moment, according to data from V. Čubrilović, Serbia could not have had more than 50,000 – 60,000 inhabitants.”

He says 50,000-60,000 inhabitants, not Serbs, which means that at that time there were not many Serbs in the area of today’s Serbia (with Kosovo, without Vojvodina). It should also be known that at that time the majority population in Serbia was Muslim.
