Counter to Serbian propaganda among certain nationalist circles claiming that Serbs always fought against Ottoman rule, here in this publication, we can find an interesting passage by Gerhard Cornelius von den Driesch who wrote that Serbian peasants werre carefully protected from conscription (military enlistment).

“Hundreds of years ago, yet it was in these very times that the foundation for a lasting improvement was laid. That such an improvement came about was likely due in large part to the times of Austrian rule. Driesch, in his 1723 memorandum to Virmondt (p. 433), recounts how carefully the Serbian peasants were protected from conscription.”
