The Serbian defeats against Ottoman forces at Gurgusovac (Knjaževac) and Tresibaba in 1876

Cited:

“Constantinople, August 6 (Official): Yesterday, after two days of fighting, the Turks captured Gurgusovac (Knjaževac). The town was burned to the ground by volunteers. The losses were considerable.

A telegram from Calafat, dated August 6, states that Tugri confirms the defeat of the Serbs in the Knjaževac area. The Turks stormed the Serbian positions. The Serbs are said to have suffered enormous losses and fled partly north toward Zaječar and partly west toward Banja (Sokobanja). Chernaev held back the reinforcements he had sent to Deligrad, but they arrived too late.

Belgrade, August 6 (Official): Colonel Horvatović fought for five days on the heights of Tresibaba against superior enemy forces, but, exhausted by continuous fighting, his troops were compelled to withdraw and occupied the defiles between Knjaževac and Banja. On August 3, about 2,000 Turks launched a sortie against our left wing from Sjenica, but were repulsed and left 150 dead on the field.”
