Today, in my capacity as Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kosova, I filed a criminal report against Serbia’s Minister Snezhana Paunović following her utterly despicable and criminal statement that “if she were Slobodan Milošević, she would have carried out the ethnic cleansing of Kosova in 1998.”
Such criminal offenses are punishable in most civilized countries that are governed by the rule of law. That applies to the Republic of Kosova as well, and therefore I filed a criminal report against the person who committed that criminal offense. She has not only dehumanized the victims once again, but she has fueled hatred and nationalist aggression among those in Serbia who hail the war criminal Milošević and his cronies.
To those who continue to hail the barbaric leader, among whom we have to count the current President of Serbia, who served as Milošević’s Minister of Propaganda during the aggression against Kosova.
If the world had any doubt that Serbia has not changed, that government is proof that it is high time for European and other Western leaders to see the reality in Serbia and to shield Europe and Serbia’s neighbors from this revival of ethnic and racist hatred, which has managed to engulf all levels of Serbian politics, up to the government and the president of this country.
Serbia’s leaders continue to threaten peace and stability in the region out of simple barbaric and deeply racist reflexes.
It is about time to send a strong signal that not appeasing these dangerous people is the right strategy for European and Western politics, but rather rebuking them in order to send a signal not only to Serbia but also to Russia and others who are bound to the same concept of racist supremacy.
If we in Europe fail once again to stop those developments that end in bloodshed, war, and the deaths of tens and hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, we will fail the core values of this continent.
