“Serbia, Belgrade. September 2nd. The messages of grief are arriving here in rapid succession. No sooner had the news of the Montenegrin defeat at the Rijeka River been passed around to the point where one dared to deny the truth of Omer Pasha’s telegram, than the horrific news of Garibaldi’s defeat, wounding, and capture arrived. I hardly need to assure you that this news made a devastating impression here, all the more so as one had been prepared for a completely different development.

The first reports arriving via private dispatches were strongly doubted, and for a long time, people were also reluctant to believe the newspaper telegrams, although, or rather because, no one harbors any illusions about the significance of the defeat of the volunteer corps and national guards in Italy in relation to the local situation. To complete the list of misfortunes, Prince Michael Obrenovich received a telegram from Montenegro last night announcing the capture of Cetinje and the Prince’s flight.”
