“None of the cabin crew helped”

An Albanian passenger has become the hero of an event that could have ended in tragedy, after helping to save a man who was almost sucked out of a Ryanair plane during a flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen, Germany.
Eleven days after the incident, 61-year-old Ljubisha Karovic told The Guardian of the moments of terror he experienced when the window next to his seat shattered after the cabin lost pressure.
“The explosion is what I remember. It’s the noise before the chaos, the noise I hear every time I close my eyes to sleep,” he said.
Karovic was in a window seat when he was pulled out of the plane up to his chest and lost consciousness. He survived thanks to his seatbelt and the immediate reaction of passengers.
His wife, Svetlana Grkovic, said that an Albanian passenger played a crucial role in saving her husband.
“A man, I think he was Albanian, was extraordinary. He did everything he could to pull her inside and then tried to close the window. First with a bag, which sucked her out, then with a suitcase, which worked. We will be eternally grateful to him.”
According to her, her husband was left “half inside and half outside the plane” for about two minutes, and she hopes to meet the Albanian one day to thank him in person.
Karovic suffered injuries to his head, neck and arm, but says he feels lucky to be alive.
“I’m lucky. My head and neck still hurt, but I’m alive. Maybe my seatbelt saved me. Maybe it was fate. I believe in God and I thank him every day.”
