“The only credible news that has arrived today from the theater of war in the Orient is probably that the Turks are making preparations for a decisive battle. Regarding the Serbian victory telegrams, of which at least three are delivered every day, the Cologne Gazette expresses the certainly very correct conjecture that not only the victories but even the described battles themselves are largely pure fantasy.

In lying, the Serbs have accomplished far greater things than Don Carlos did in Spain. Just as we have already done, we draw attention to the fact that the Serbian telegrams contradict each other, like a cutter who, in the heat of conversation, forgets what he just claimed. Characteristic, however, is the open partisanship of the Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung for the Serbs, whose victories it now accepts as hard cash, in direct contrast to the doubts expressed two days ago.

Unfortunately, these victories were bought with very heavy losses. This pain of the respectable paper will probably be somewhat alleviated by the fact that, according to their latest official bulletin, the Serbs have again razed several Turkish villages to the German level.”
