The proposed new euro banknotes celebrate great Europeans through themes such as writers, composers, scientists and the arts. These are important choices, but Europe is also built on its living cultural traditions. I would like to invite the European Union and the European Central Bank to consider designs that celebrate Europe’s intangible cultural heritage, including traditions recognised by UNESCO.
Imagine a euro banknote featuring the Albanian Xhubleta, one of Europe’s oldest surviving traditional garments, together with the Fustanella, set against the magnificent Albanian Highlands. Such a design would celebrate more than 4,000 years of culture, craftsmanship, family values and living tradition. This would not simply honour one nation, it would honour a shared part of Europe’s cultural mosaic.
Featuring traditional heritage on euro banknotes would inspire millions of Europeans and visitors from around the world to discover the richness, diversity and history of our continent. Europe’s greatest treasure is not only found in its monuments and literature, but also in the cultures, traditions and communities that have kept their heritage alive for thousands of years. Let’s celebrate Europe’s living heritage, not only its famous individuals.
