The Serbian plan to carve up Albania
“A barracks for 4,000 regular troops is to be built in Antivari. The Turks are beginning to fear for Albania, well aware that the first three months of this year are merely a prelude to what may occur sooner or later. Admittedly, the Montenegrins’ plans are somewhat far-reaching; the Serbian press is already carving up Albania and Herzegovina for itself and Montenegro, acting as if there were no other interests to consider.
At Godinje, the Arnaut Beys suffered repeated defeats due to a lack of unified command, while the poorly secured position at Vir left the Turks vulnerable to daily Montenegrin attacks.”
The Battle of Godinje
“According to a report received here from Antivari, it is confirmed that the following fell in the skirmish at Godinje: 150 Nizams (regular troops) along with a Bimbashi (major), 110 irregulars along with an Aga, and 85 men from mixed units. Furthermore, the Turks lost two cannons, one ship, 500 rifles, nine horses, and five loads of gunpowder and lead.”

“Furst Alexander Kara Georgiewitsch von Serbien hat ein Contin gent von 40,000 Mann angetragen bestehend aus Serben welche man in Rußland und Desterrreich so laut ausposaunt hat einen der schönsten Stämme Curopas Albaniern und Arnauten Fürst Alexander ist Christ wie sein Volk aber ungeachtet aller russischen Aussendlinge welche die Religion als Aufwieglungsmitttel benügt haben lassen die Serben sich von einem richtigen politischen Justinet leiten und sind entschlossen im Kriegsfall auf die Seite der Türken zu treten Schon die Thatsache daß dieses Gefühl zu Gunsten der Türkei vorhanden ist zu welcher Serbien nur nominell ge hört beweißt daß die Klagen über Bedrückung der Christen keinen Grund haben können Mit diesen Contingenten wird das Heer welches die Türkei gegen Rußland verwenden kann fast auf 480,000 Man anschwellen”
Translated:
“Prince Alexander Karageorgevich of Serbia has offered a contingent of 40,000 men, consisting of Serbs whom Russia and Austria have so loudly proclaimed to be one of the most beautiful tribes of Europe, Albanians and Arnauts. Prince Alexander is a Christian, as is his people, but despite all the Russian emissaries who have used religion as a means of incitement, the Serbs allow themselves to be guided by sound political judgment and are determined, in the event of war, to take the side of the Turks.
The mere fact that this sentiment in favor of Turkey exists, to which Serbia belongs only nominally, proves that the complaints about the oppression of Christians cannot have any foundation. With these contingents, the army which Turkey can employ against Russia will rise to almost 480,000 men.”
