The Albanian Illyrian elements of Zubci, Banjani, Rudine, Piva and Drobnjak of Hercegovina and the fustanella of Knez Vasojevic of Foča documented by Moritz Hoernes in 1882

The “Knez Vasojevic” mentioned in this 1882 account is not Nikola Vasojević (d. 1844), but an unidentified older Vasojević prince or chieftain whose tomb monument was recorded near Foča by Moritz Hoernes in 1882. The monument contained relief representations of figures wearing the fustanella.

Cited from Montags Revue:

“The Afrikaners are no more purely Dutch than the Herzegovinians are purely Slavic. Particularly along the line that forms the base of the uprising today—just as it did in 1875—and which Blau not unjustly termed a “watershed of peoples” (encompassing the regions of Zubci, Banjani, Rudine, Piva, and Drobnjak), the Albanian-Illyrian element—a barbaric, anti-cultural indigenous strain—projects into the Slavic sphere.

Here, numerous place names and family names that are neither Turkish nor Slavic have survived; here, too, remain vestiges of a distinctive, barbaric attire—such as the chest-jacket armored with silver plates, rings, and chains, and the Albanian fustanella. While we did not find the latter in actual use, we did see it depicted on the tombstone of a Knez Vasojevic and as the undergarment on several bas-relief figures.

Yet, more than such external characteristics—which might occupy the archaeologist—the Volksgeist (spirit of the people), in all its manifestations, speaks to the kinship between this element and the North Albanian mountain tribes. Undoubtedly—and this could easily be demonstrated—most of the Montenegrin tribes are also related to the Arnauts to an equal or even closer degree, though they have been Slavicized and overlaid by refugees and immigrants.

Older historians make no distinction between the Montenegrins and the Clementini, simply calling them both Albanians. If, in concluding these geographical and ethnological observations regarding the insurrection zone, we are to offer practical proposals—proceeding from the premise that the rapid suppression of the uprising is beyond doubt—we must look beyond the current phase of military operations and define the specific task of our Monarchy’s policy”.
